people, applications, ai

I notice fear mongering online about AI and related taking over, much like how computers were going to take over in the 90’s … yet here we still are.

Let’s (let us) contrast and summarize the activities of people, computer programs, and AI programs:

People:

- Diverse Activities: People engage in a wide range of activities throughout the day, including work, education, socializing, daily chores, exercise, hobbies, and personal care.

- Subject to Emotions and Preferences: Human activities are influenced by emotions, preferences, and individual choices.

- Time-Aware: Humans operate on a daily schedule, with activities structured around time, including work hours, leisure time, and sleep.

Computer Programs:

- Task-Oriented: Computer programs are designed to perform specific tasks or functions based on coded instructions.

- Automation: Programs often automate repetitive tasks, handle data processing, manage files, and provide user interfaces for interaction.

- No Concept of Time: Unlike humans, programs don't have a concept of time; they execute tasks when activated or triggered.

AI Programs:

- Data Analysis and Learning: AI systems analyze data, recognize patterns, and often learn from examples to improve performance.

- Decision-Making: AI systems, particularly those based on machine learning, can make decisions or predictions based on learned patterns.

- Specialized Tasks: AI programs are often designed for specific applications, such as natural language processing, image recognition, recommendation systems, and autonomous decision-making.

- No Inherent Awareness: AI lacks consciousness and operates without awareness; its actions are driven by algorithms and data.

In summary, people engage in diverse and emotionally influenced activities with a time-aware structure. Computer programs are task-oriented, automating functions without a concept of time. AI programs specialize in data analysis, learning, and decision-making, performing specific tasks without inherent awareness or understanding of time. Each entity serves distinct roles and operates based on its unique characteristics and functionalities, and abilities.

To put it another way, everyone enjoys having running water, plumbing, electricity but not everyone wants to be a plumber, electrician or a civil engineer, yet when technology advancement is here to improve the workloads of (proverbial) plumber, electrician and engineer, people who aren’t one start to panic about loosing opportunities in something they aren’t even doing or pursuing.
